Altınordu’s modest success at the highest level belies their enviable reputation for fostering young talent through a homegrown philosophy – one that values the person as highly as the player. Based in the Turkish west coast city of İzmir, Altinordu were founded in 1923, but have never won a top division title in their 97-year history. The closest they came was a trio of second-placed finishes between 1927 and 1935 in the now-defunct Turkish Football Championship.

Indeed, Altinordu’s first team have not even played in Turkey’s top division for the past 50 years, yet their youth set-up attracts admiring glances from around the world. Their motto is ‘Good person, good citizen, good footballer’, and their youngsters’ personal advancement is considered to be just as important as their professional development. Roma’s rapid winger Cengiz Ünder and Leicester City’s hardy defender Çağlar Söyüncü are Altinordu’s most famous exports so far, but if the performance of their U-17s at Al Kass 2019 is anything to go by, there will soon be others following in their footsteps.
